"Eric..."
The sound of running water in the bathroom had just ceased when the soft call drifted from the bedroom, a whisper like velvet brushing against his eardrums. Barefoot on the damp tiles, he stood before the misty mirror, wet hair clinging to his forehead, a towel slung loosely over one shoulder. The black wolf tattoo on his chest shimmered faintly under the lingering steam.
He froze.
That voice—wasn't Alice's.
And yet, the woman on the bed was unmistakably her. Dressed in a white nightgown, long hair spilling across the pillow, her eyes gleamed with familiar warmth, lips curling into a smile meant only for him.
"Who's kind, gentle... and drop-dead gorgeous?" she murmured, fingertip grazing her lower lip as if reciting a private poem meant for lovers alone.
Eric’s heart skipped a beat.
Those words—were Eliza’s secret phrase.
Three years ago, on a rain-lashed night, Eliza had nestled in his arms and ended it all with that very joke. He’d replied, “Then you’re the fiercest, most unreasonable, and most beautiful madwoman in the world.” They never saw each other again.
And now, Alice was repeating it—word for word.
He gripped the towel tighter. "Alice? What are you talking about?"
She blinked, smiling innocently, seductively. "Didn’t you say only you could understand this phrase?"
A chill crept up his spine.
He took a half-step back, voice low. "The towel slipped. Can you get me a new one?"
Alice slowly sat up, brow furrowing slightly—but her gaze never left him. "You never let me leave the bed... unless you're not him."
Before the last word faded, the doorknob turned.
Click.
They both turned.
The door opened. Backlit by the hallway light stood a woman.
Silver-gray hair, three black studs in her left ear, an old scar tracing her neck—Eliza.
She looked at Eric, lips curling into a smirk. "Long time no see, my dear accomplice."
The air turned to ice.
Eric’s pupils shrank to pinpricks.
